Good Questions
What makes a chocolate chip cookie “organic”?
An organic chocolate chip cookie is simply one made with organic versions of its core ingredients — the flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and chocolate. “Organic” describes how those ingredients were grown and produced: without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and without GMOs, under the same standards that put the word “organic” on anything else at the grocery store.
It's a word that gets used loosely, so here's the honest, plain-language version — what “organic” actually means once it's a cookie, and how it shows up in the Everyday, the organic small-batch chocolate chip cookie we bake here in Red Bank, NJ.
“Organic” is about the ingredients, one by one
A chocolate chip cookie is a short list of ingredients, and each one has an organic version:
- Flour — milled from wheat grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
- Butter — from cows raised on organic feed, without added hormones or antibiotics.
- Sugar — from organically grown cane rather than conventionally processed sugar.
- Eggs — from hens raised to organic standards.
- Chocolate — made with organic cacao and organic sugar.
The more of those that are organic, the more honestly a cookie can call itself organic. It is a sourcing choice on every single ingredient, not a flavor or a marketing sticker.
Does “organic” mean healthy?
No — and we'd never pretend it did. Organic describes how the ingredients were grown, not whether a cookie is a health food. A cookie is still butter, sugar, chocolate, and joy, and it should be. Choosing organic ingredients is about what we'd want in the food we make for our own family; it doesn't turn dessert into a salad.
How can you tell if a cookie is really organic?
Ask. A bakery that sources organic ingredients will happily tell you which ones and where they come from. Vague “all-natural” or “clean” language isn't the same as organic — organic is a specific standard about how the ingredient was grown and produced. Why we bake ours this way
We only make one thing, so we get to be particular about it. Starting from organic ingredients — plus the hemp seed that quietly ended up in every batch — is how the Everyday became the cookie it is. You can read where the hemp came from in our origin-story post, and if you've ever wondered about that hemp seed, we answered the most common question about it here.
Thanks for reading. Now go eat a cookie.
